The Pala Band of Mission Indians, located in Pala, CA seeks support to mitigate the effect of the coronavirus on tribal members and surrounding community members utilizing education and outreach services that reflect culturally appropriate materials. By building capacity within the Tribe, we anticipate that the effects of the pandemic will be reduced and that will be better prepared to operate tribal businesses in the future. Our proposal includes engaging tribal employees and community members in a timely manner to reduce and to prevent contamination. We propose five outcomes for out mitigation strategy. These out comes include: 1) To organize and to provide a timely, coordinated approach to assess the tribe's disaster-related needs and to develop a goal oriented plan that outlines the steps necessary to achieve recovery by creating and disseminating publish health messages using culturally appropriate content on social media; 2) To test for the presence of the COVID-19 using test kits and antibody tests; 3) To identify current capacity to treat severely ill tribal patients with COVID-19 and to determine how to assess bed capacity; 4) To provide emergency financial assistance, recovery COVID losses, and supportive services to elder households impacted by the pandemic; 5) To track the spread of COVID-19 on the Pala Reservation to determine trends and intervention strategies. This award will serve the entire Pala Reservation community and surrounding areas because of the access through social media. We anticipate a minimum of 1,000 community members will be served.
