Implementation of the South Dakota Violent Death Reporting System - Through the South Dakota Violent Death Reporting System (SDVDRS) the South Dakota Department of Health (DOH) will collaborate with law enforcement (LE), medical examiners (ME)/coroners, and the Vital Records Office to maintain the SDVDRS to collect timely and comprehensive surveillance data on all violent deaths in South Dakota. In collaboration with partners this information will be used to increase violence prevention efforts and reduce morbidity and mortality related to violence. By the end of the project period, August 31, 2027, the DOH will achieve the following key outcomes: • Outcome 1. Improved completeness, timeliness, and quality of violent death surveillance data demonstrated by: a. Increase in requests for SDVDRS data and reports; and b. Increase in number of data providers reporting to the SDVDRS. • Outcome 2. Stronger relationships with key partners demonstrated by: a. Increase in partners using SDVDRS data to inform programmatic and policy decisions. • Outcome 3. Increased access to NVDRS data by the public and partners to inform their violence and possibly injury prevention activities demonstrated by: a. SDVDRS data available via public data dashboard and reports. • Outcome 4. Increased use of violent death surveillance data by partners to inform violence prevention programmatic and policy decisions demonstrated by: a. Increased presentations on SDVDRS data • Outcome 5. Increased ability to describe the geographic distribution of violent deaths and understand the social determinants of health in relation to violent death-related health disparities demonstrated by: a. Increase in data products focused on the intersection of SDVDRS and social determinants of health Data dissemination will expand in scope through data dashboards, reports and fact sheets, as well as continue presentations and collaborations with partners focused on violence prevention.
