The South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control – South Carolina Violent Death Reporting System (SCVDRS) will collect and distribute surveillance data on homicides, suicides, deaths from legal intervention, deaths of undetermined intent, and unintentional firearm deaths for 2023-2027 to improve the planning, implementation, and evaluation of violence prevention programs and other “data to action” efforts to reduce violence. SCVDRS will collect standard data elements provided by CDC on all violent deaths in South Carolina and submit this information in de-identified form to CDC using the CDC web-based data entry system. Data elements will be collected from three sources: death certificates, coroner/medical examiner reports, and law enforcement reports. SCVDRS will distribute data to the public and partners working to prevent violence and the injuries and deaths resulting from violence. The collection and use of these data will support the national goal of preventing violent death across all states, the District of Columbia, and U.S. territories.
