Rhode Island Violent Death Reporting System - Violence is a major preventable public health problem in the United States and Rhode Island. Through this funding opportunity, the Rhode Island Violent Death Reporting System (RIVDRS) plans to enhance its surveillance system and collaborate with partners so data can be used to inform action and reduce the burden of violent deaths in the state. RIVDRS intends to achieve five main outcomes by the end of the project period. The first outcome is to improve the completeness, timeliness, and quality of RIVDRS data (Outcome 1). Innovative strategies to improve more timely availability of data and completeness of variables, such as sexual orientation and gender identity, are discussed in the application. RIVDRS plans to ensure diversity of its Advisory Committee and collaborate with community members to strengthen relationships with key partners (Outcome 2). Data will be disseminated using multiple methods to ensure the public and partners have both increased access to RIVDRS data (Outcome 3) and increased use of RIVDRS data to inform violence prevention activities (Outcome 4). The creation and dissemination of an optional data dashboard is proposed. RIVDRS also plans to further integrate GIS mapping and complementary data sources. These activities aim to increase the ability to describe the geographic distribution of violent deaths and better understand linkages between violent death-related health disparities in Rhode Island and social determinants of health (Outcome 5).
