Advancing the Violent Death collection and data dissemination using the National Violent Death Reporting System in Nevada. - The Nevada Health and Human Services (DHHS), Nevada’s state vital records authority, along with local partners, proposes to collect data on all violent deaths that occur during period of performance (Option 1). Participation in the National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) will support a strategic collaboration between the DHHS, the county CMEs and the various LE agencies of Nevada. Although each agency is required to work with various aspects of deaths resulting from violence, this effort will galvanize efforts toward: interstate data sharing, public heath surveillance of violent death trends and the epidemiology support necessary to identify future prevention activities and support current programs designed to lower the incidents of violent death in Nevada and the United States. If funded, the Nevada NVDRS (NVVDRS) will be a centralized system in Nevada that collects and combines statewide violent death information and disseminates it at the county, state and national levels. The collection and dissemination of comprehensive information and the ability to detect violent death trends timely is critical to support violence prevention efforts in Nevada. This funding will maintain the infrastructure necessary to collect all required data elements and associated reports as described in the funding opportunity announcement (FOA). The continuation of NVVDRS and its network of data providers will be the only statewide system linking CMEs, LE and Public Health electronically to support the CDC’s NVDRS. Although the number of violent deaths in Nevada may seem low at first glance, its rate of violent deaths, such as suicides, exceeds national numbers in many instances. Additionally, its geographic size, population disbursement, centers of tourism, and resident's lifestyles make Nevada unique. The socioeconomic diversity and the types of violence associated with this environment will contribute to CDC efforts to perform surveillance and support prevention activities nationally.
