Burdick American Indians Into Nursing Program at UND-Recruitment/Retention of American Indians Into Nursing (RAIN) Program is an established support program for a American Indian/Alaska Native students pursuing a nursing degree at the University of North Dakota College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines. The RAIN Program has a well-developed program structure and processes; the RAIN Mentor Model of student support addresses the holistic needs of AI/AN students. The RAIN program has a proven record of student success since 1990. Utilizing the RAIN Mentor model of support services; 233 AI/AN nursing students have earned bachelors of science degrees, 67 masters degrees, and one has earned a doctor of nursing practice. In addition, five nurses have earned Ph.D.s at other institutions and one has earned her Juris Doctorate. Many of these RN’s are now working on reservations and in rural communities. The RAIN program is committed to continue to increase the number of AI/AN nurses at the bachelor and advanced practice levels that are working with AI/AN communities. The Purpose of this IHS cooperative agreement is to recruit, retain, graduate and increase the number of American Indian/Alaska Native (AI?AN) registered nurses, and advanced practice nurses who deliver quality health care services to AI/AN communities Project Goals: 1) Increase the number of AI/AN students in the CNPD; 2) Continue to provide the successful mentoring model of the Recruitment/Retention of American Indians into Nursing (RAIN) Program to assist more AI/AN students; 3) Develop sustainable internal & external partnerships to build recruitment & retention strategies to reach more AI/AN students; 4) Increase the number of CNPD graduates who serve in Health Professional Shortage Areas (HPSAs) and Tribal Nations. Objectives: 1) The identification and recruitment of AI/AN people into nursing. Several approaches will be utilized to increase awareness of nursing as a career, emphasize the need for Native nurses and provide prospective students with an overview of RAIN advising, mentoring, placement and support services; 2) Retain AI/AN pre-nursing and undergraduate and graduate nursing students by implementing RAIN Mentor Model; 3) Provide scholarships for stipends, tuition and fees to eligible federally recognized undergraduate American Indian undergraduate and master's students; 4) Assist in tracking and placement of undergraduate and graduate nursing program graduates; 5) Support students to attend training on mental health and substance abuse.
