One Johns Creek Drug-Free Communities (DFC) Support Program (Yr 6 FY25 Cohort) - The One Johns Creek (OJC) Drug-Free Communities Support Program-Year 6 targets youth ages 9-18 in Johns Creek, Georgia, a thriving community of 81,108 residents spanning 31 square miles. As Georgia's 10th largest city, Johns Creek ranks as the #1 best suburb (Travel + Leisure, 2024) and 5th safest city (Safewise, 2025). The diverse population comprises White (49.8%), Asian (28.3%), Black or African American (11.2%), multiracial (7.8%), and Hispanic/Latino (6.3%) residents. Despite excellent schools and above-average median incomes, this affluent community faces substantial substance misuse challenges. Johns Creek's culture combines privilege with disconnection, characterized by busy two-earner households, long commutes, intense academic pressure, limited parental monitoring, and diffused family structures. These factors create an environment conducive to youth substance use as a coping mechanism. The proliferation of vape shops, convenience stores selling paraphernalia, and readily available alcohol in homes and retail establishments further compounds these challenges. Law enforcement agencies have responded proactively to these concerns. The Atlanta-Carolinas HIDTA, in collaboration with Johns Creek and Alpharetta Police, works to disrupt drug trafficking organizations through intelligence-driven operations. These efforts intensified after Johns Creek was identified as part of the "heroin triangle" in 2017. However, despite these initiatives and the community's resources, Johns Creek previously lacked a comprehensive, connected substance use prevention system. One Johns Creek has successfully filled this critical gap as a student-led, adult-supported coalition with the mission of "Growing a community committed to reduce youth/young adult substance misuse while creating a thriving culture of wellness." OJC has established itself as the cornerstone of prevention efforts in Johns Creek by unifying students, parents, educators, healthcare providers, faith communities, law enforcement, and business leaders. The coalition has transformed individual efforts into collective impact through cross-sector collaboration and strategic community asset leveraging. OJC has developed consistent area-wide prevention messaging while building sustainable infrastructure and partnerships focused on reducing youth alcohol, nicotine, marijuana, and prescription drug use. By emphasizing protective factors while minimizing risk factors, OJC provides the coordinated approach that complements existing law enforcement efforts. The coalition's proven strategies, youth leadership development, parent education, policy advocacy, and community awareness campaigns, create environmental and behavioral changes that reduce youth substance accessibility while promoting healthy alternatives. Through this established approach, One Johns Creek will continue addressing both immediate concerns and underlying factors contributing to youth substance misuse, creating lasting positive change in the community's prevention culture.
