Coalition for a Better Wallingford - The Coalition for a Better Wallingford is embarking on a transformative initiative to prevent and reduce youth substance use within the community. Seeking funding from the Drug-Free Communities (DFC) grant, the Coalition seeks to establish its first Strategic Prevention Plan, informed by evidence-based data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). This comprehensive plan will adhere to the seven strategies model, addressing critical areas of prevention and intervention to foster a healthier, safer environment for youth in Wallingford. The foundation of this project lies in the Coalition's commitment to community engagement and collaboration. With a newly elected board of directors and representation from the twelve sectors, the Coalition has evolved significantly, positioning itself to provide interventional services as well as education and advocacy in addressing substance use issues. Building on our past successes, such as our in-school lunch programs at the high schools, and by harnessing the expertise of Coalition staff and partnering with Chanana Consulting, the organization will conduct a thorough assessment of community needs and risk factors, laying the groundwork for targeted. Ainterventions. An important of this strategic direction will be the implementation of a comprehensive community asssement and the two-tierd approach to defining short and long-term goals, developing relevant performance measures, and systems for gathering and evaluating outcomes. Essential to achieving our goals is hiring a trained Substance Use Prevention Specialist to inform the plan and develop programming that will meet the specific needs of the changing demographic. For example, the Coalition will launch an Alcohol Prevention Program, offering comprehensive training for liquor store employees to promote responsible alcohol sales and prevent underage drinking. Additionally, the Coalition will host community forums and town hall meetings, inviting stakeholders to facilitate dialogue and raise awareness around substance use issues that vary across different populations. Evaluation and accountability are integral to this project, ensuring that interventions are effective and responsive to community needs. Through rigorous data collection and analysis, including implement a series of surveys and inviting the public to provide feedback, the Coalition will measure outcomes such as rates of substance use, perceptions of harm, and community engagement. These metrics will inform the ongoing refinement of the strategis plan, enabling the Coalition to adapt and innovate in real time. Overall, the project represents a significant step forward in the Coalition's mission to enhance community well-being and support the healthy development of youth in Wallingford. By leveraging evidence-based strategies, fostering collaboration, and empowering community stakeholders, the Coalition aims to create lasting change and promote a culture of wellness and resilience for future generations. We are optimistic that this plan will significantly reduce youth substance use and create a safe.
