The UW Coalition increases and strengthens collaboration among community sectors to support efforts to prevent use of alcohol and marijuana by youth in the Near west side, a Chicago community. - The Unity West DFC Coalition target’s youth ages 12 – 17, and others primarily African American, living within the Near West Side of Chicago to address “Underage drinking and Marijuana Use”. The Near West population is primarily African-American (21,063), which is 30.5% of the population, and mostly single (57%). 52.3% of households are headed by single mothers, densely populated. Juvenile crime arrests are at 64% and the recidivist rate is 29%. However, the crime rate in the Near West Side has been dropping (10% in the last 2 years). Poverty, high unemployment, poor academic achievement are indicators of youth engagement in at-risk behaviors. UW Coalition was formed in 2013, to address risky behaviors and environmental factors influencing youth misuse of substances.
