The Youth Running Strong Task Force Drug-Free Communities Project will work to prevent youth tobacco, marijuana and methamphetamine use through vaping. The target area for the proposed project is the community of Sanders and surrounding areas in the rural, South Central portion of the Navajo Nation in Apache County, Arizona. The Mission of the Youth Running Strong Task Force is to reduce youth alcohol and substance use by engaging the community and delivering culturally adapted prevention strategies that are reflective of the Navajo way of life, and by encouraging our youth to honor their heritage by learning and keeping tribal values and traditions by making smart, sound, and healthy choices. The Youth Running Strong Task Force will address public health problems related to substance use and abuse by implementing an approach that meets the cultural needs of the Navajo Nation. Existing evidence-based programs will be adapted for cultural and linguistic needs and will serve to prevent youth substance use, foster community connectivity, and strengthening Navajo families as integral mechanisms in the fight against substance abuse.
