The Piast Institute, the sponsor and fiduciary of the Hamtramck Drug Free Community Coalition (HDFCC) proposes the project “Community Action to Reduce Youth Substance Abuse.” This 5-year project aims to strengthen collaborative efforts across community sectors in order to reduce youth use and abuse of alcohol and tobacco products including cigarettes, chewing tobacco, hookah, E-cigarettes, and other vaping-related items. HDFCC’s project will address the factors of youth overexposure, visibility, and accessibility to substances that are increasing the risk of substance use and abuse in the 48212 zip code area. HDFCC will implement prevention strategies to educate the community on the risks and harms of alcohol and tobacco products through community conversations and Public Service Announcements for youth, parents, civic leaders, and business owners. HDFCC will also reduce access/enhance barriers by educating alcohol and tobacco product retailers on best practices for the physical design and display of products to reduce visibility and accessibility to youth.
