Prevention Coalition providing information, enhancing skills and providing support to reduce substance use in Maricopa, AZ - The Be Awesome Youth Coalition DFC proposal is a five-year project to continue youth substance abuse prevention efforts in the city of Maricopa Arizona. Strategies for this project will include: Enhancing Skills for coalition staff and key stakeholders in order to provide strategies focusing on reducing youth substance use by a skilled team. Providing Information to provide accurate information to local youth about the consequences of underage drinking, and marijuana abuse. Providing information to parents to encourage conversations with their children about the risks of underage drinking and marijuana abuse. Change of physical design by providing information to law makers and officials to increase collaboration and coordination to improve the road conditions on SR 347, one of the main roads in and out of the city. Due to hyper growth in the city the road’s commute is two hours one way because of heavy congestion for parents. This is leaving youth with high amounts of unsupervised time and is an obstacle to parents being involved with their families. Enhance access and reducing barriers to therapeutic services to reduce risk factors contributing to substance abuse through the publication of and biannual update of a printed and online resource guide for Maricopa residents and a proposal for a local private fund to help families supplement costs for mental health services.
