Bartow County Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Project Years 6-10 - The Bartow Against Drugs Coalition will use DFC funds to address youth marijuana and tobacco/nicotine use. Coalition goals will be facilitated in part through the implementation of a broader community awareness initiative and specific action-driven campaigns. This multi-faceted approach will increase the knowledge base among parents and youth, improve attitudes about the prevention of and harms associated with substance use, create community level changes in the broader culture, including values and norms, and support the Coalition’s plan to reduce early onset of marijuana and tobacco/nicotine use. Bartow Against Drugs will follow the DFC’s guidance in reducing youth substance use by implementing strategies to reach the two main goals: 1. Establish and strengthen collaboration among community stakeholders and organizations to address youth substance use, and 2. Reduce substance use among youth and, over time, reduce substance use among adults by addressing the factors in a community that increase the risk of substance use and promoting the factors that minimize the risk of substance use. To achieve this, the coalition will implement various strategies that are in line with the Seven Strategies for Community-Level Change. By following this model, we expect successful short, intermediate, and long-term outcomes at reaching our goals. Short-term goals include providing relevant training to stakeholders, community members, and youth coalition members to enhance skills to lead to stronger leadership among the coalition. As leadership grows, the coalition will reach intermediate goals of using strategies that increase the promotion of factors that minimize the risk of substance use, as well as providing more opportunities for youth to engage in alternate activities. Long term outcomes will result in strong established collaboration among community members and community organizations, which will also result in reducing youth substance use.
