Strengthening Community Collaborations to Reduce Youth Substance Use - The mission of the Fuquay-Varina Coalition for a Healthy and Safe Community is to prevent substance use in middle school and high school youth. The coalition uses a comprehensive multi-sector approach to address needs in the Fuquay-Varina Community. This proposed project will focus on building coalition capacity and reducing youth substance use of nicotine and alcohol. The coalition is taking a four-pronged approach with comprehensive strategies that address individual, family, and community-level risk and protective factors that influence youth substance use. This four-pronged approach consists of building coalition capacity, building skills and connections, increasing access to cessation support and related policies, and addressing social norms within the school and community. The coalition will use the seven strategies for community change to implement both evidence-based and practice-based youth substance use prevention strategies in the community. Some strategies include working with the 12 sectors to implement presentations/informational tables, social media campaigns, efforts to build alternative coping strategies and increase trusted adults, pledge drives, provide access to healthy alternative activities, increase cessation efforts, and encourage parents/caregivers to have conversations with their youth and secure and monitor any alcohol in the home. The Coalition will continue to work closely with local leaders to discuss impacts of policies on youth substance use and ensure best practices in substance use prevention are considered during policy decisions. The coalition will increase education and awareness around the issues, build the necessary skills to support healthy decisions, encourage more positive parent/child conversations, connect youth to alternative activities, and increase access to tobacco cessation resources. By going upstream to deal with underlying issues that directly impact youth substance use like mental wellness, increasing youth alternative coping strategies, and trusted adults, we will reduce the number of youth using alcohol and nicotine as coping mechanisms. By encouraging parents to monitor and secure alcohol in the home, and providing them with the skills and tools to do so, the community will reduce the number one place youth access alcohol.
