Michigan Preventing Adverse Childhood Experiences - Data to Action - Michigan’s State Action Plan to address adverse childhood experiences is a roadmap for dismantling intergenerational trauma and transforming environments to create resilient, inclusive, and prosperous environments where children, youth, and families thrive. The “Michigan Preventing Adverse Childhood Experience—Data to Action” (MI PACE-D2A) project will implement key strategies to strengthen Michigan’s ACE surveillance data infrastructure and support data-driven prevention efforts in alignment with the State Action Plan to address ACEs and improve outcomes for Michigan’s children. MI-PACE-D2A three focus areas are: 1) surveillance, 2) primary prevention interventions, and 3) data to action. Long-term outcomes include: • Improved and sustainable systems for ACE prevention activities • Decreased ACEs, particularly among high-burden populations • Increased number of healthy and thriving children • Improved health and social outcomes that have been linked to ACEs The project team will conduct a capacity assessment to enhance the state’s current surveillance system and develop recommendations to improve capacity. The team will gather and synthesize state- and local-level ACE data in an Azure cloud-based data dashboard. The dashboard will allow for increased state-level monitoring of trends in ACE indicators and tracking ACE data. A statewide strategy map will explore how to use data from the dashboard to better understand community needs and inform identification of prevention strategies that address ACEs. In partnership with the Michigan ACE Initiative, 200 individuals will be trained to raise awareness about ACEs, who will then train at least 2,000 Michigan residents on ACE science. Trainers will be given information and tools to equip communities to create environments that prevent ACEs. In collaboration with multi-sector partners, this work will also develop a messaging campaign to shift cultural norms to reduce violence and aggression. Building on the work of the Michigan Home Visiting Initiative, cross-sector leaders will develop a comprehensive Home Visiting Policy and Practice toolkit that incorporates best practices for building resilience in families and information about resources to stabilize home environments. Cross-sector leaders will convene to inform development of the strategy map and the toolkit. Local coaches will be recruited and trained to support implementation of change strategies to pilot in two communities with high needs. Data will be used to identify high-risk communities and drive selection of strategies from these resources to create trauma-informed environments for children and families. Process and outcome evaluation activities will be used to identify successes and challenges of strategies. The outcomes of MI-PACE D2A will be shared with cross-sector partners that participate in the Statewide Advisory Committee and at statewide conferences. As we will influence social norms, policy, and practice, as opposed to introduce programmatic response, changes from this work are more likely to be sustained beyond the duration of the grant.
