The Hayward Coalition for Healthy Youth (HCHY) works to prevent substance abuse and build community level capacity to effect change that improves the overall health of youth in South Hayward. - TITLE: Eden Youth and Family Center: Hayward Coalition for Healthy Youth (HCHY) The Hayward Coalition for Healthy Youth (HCHY) works to prevent substance abuse and build community level capacity to effect change that improves the overall health of at risk youth aged 11-17 residing in Hayward, a diverse and economically challenged community located in San Francisco’s East Bay. HCHY accomplishes this for over 21,000 students by increasing risk awareness and mobilizing to help enact system-wide policies to achieve a healthy community. HCHY will increase community collaboration and reduce youth substance abuse through the following strategic objectives and interventions: By 9/1/2020, increase program satisfaction and substance risk awareness indicators among HCHY members and key community stakeholders by 50% as measured by the HCHY Program Evaluation and Community Readiness Report. STRATEGIES: 1) Strengthen coalition structure by leveraging resources, increasing collaboration, and improving prevention interventions; 2) Change consequences by monitoring and strengthening tobacco retail ordinances, monitoring and enforcing drug prescribing and disposal regulations, and supporting community and youth advocacy on policy affecting access. By 9/01/2020, increase perception of risks from cannabis use by 3% among 7th, 9th and 11th graders as measured by HUSD CHKS survey. STRATEGIES: 1) Increase perception of risks from marijuana/cannabis use by conducting school workshops for youth and parents to increase awareness of risks to the developing brain from cannabis use by youth; 2) Work with HPD to develop a enforcement strategy which will empower and support student resource officers in Hayward 3) Modify policies by working with the Youth Advisory Council, The school board, and city council to develop a curriculum which addresses prevention/coping skills/and mindfulness training. By 6/15/20, increase perception of tobacco use by 5% among 7th, 9th and 11th graders as measured by HUSD CHKS survey and EYFC data survey.STRATEGIES: 1) Increase perception of risks from vaping tobacco by conducting school workshops for youth and parents to increase awareness of risks to the developing brain from nicotine use by youth; 2) Implement a strong Tobacco Retail License which restricts the sale of flavored tobacco, creates a minimum price of $8.00 for all tobacco products, and raises the buffer zone to sensitive areas such as schools and playgrounds. By 6/15/2020, increase perception of prescription drug and opioid risks by 2% among 7th, 9th, and 11th graders as measured by the Hayward Unified School District (HUSD) California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS). STRATEGIES: 1) Increase perception of risk by engaging educational and clinical professionals to present school-based workshops and neighborhood town hall meetings to increase awareness of risks, prevention strategies, and effective treatments for prescription drug and opioid abuse by youth, and hand out prescription lock boxes to the community; 2) Build youth capacity to influence behaviors and policy change through weekly training in prevention, advocacy and marketing, attending CADCA leadership training. By 9/1/2020, increase methamphetamine resources in the community and develop sustainable interventions for Hayward families. STRATEGIES: 1)Work with the city council,the Meth think tank, and HPD to assess the community needs ;2) Enact policy and interventions that will address the youth who are referred to HPD either through the court system or school referrals by developing an intermediary program which will help the youth access additional services such as education or treatment.collaboration and reduce youth substance abuse.
