The Paterson Coalition Against Substance Abuse is focused on the prevention of youth substance use in the First and Fourth Wards of Paterson, New Jersey. - Through its research and evaluation activities, the Paterson Coalition Against Substance Abuse (P-CASA) has been instrumental in informing policies that directly impact Paterson residents. P-CASA’s research-based data points help Paterson leaders understand key issues and find solutions that reduce youth access to alcohol, prescription drugs, and other substances. Specifically, P-CASA mobilized the community to pass the following ordinances: 1) Private Property Ordinance; 2) Paterson Alcohol Beverage Education Seminar (PABES); 3) Point of Sale (POS) Tobacco Ordinance; 4) Hotspot Ordinance; 5) Modified Off-Premises Alcohol Establishments Operating Hours; and 6) Re-evaluation and amendment of Paterson Public Schools Tobacco Policy. P-CASA’s mission is to foster collaboration among key community sectors in an effort to increase the capacity for environmentally-based substance abuse prevention activities throughout Paterson’s 1st and 4th Wards, with the ultimate goal of reducing substance use among the city’s youth. The basis of these efforts is building strong partnerships with the people of Paterson. Environmental strategies such as social marketing campaigns, community meetings, expressive prevention education exhibits, and our youth-led initiatives help the community understand youth substance use and strategies for intervention.
