WPY Coalition - The WPY Coalition consists of youth, parents, educators, policy makers, and youth service providers. We meet monthly to devise strategies and plan activities designed to reduce substance abuse among Waltham youth and promote mental health and wellness. Our primary goals are to increase community collaboration and to reduce 30-day use of alcohol, tobacco, and marijuana; minimize anxiety and depression; and increase school connectedness. Our efforts reach about 2500 people annually. We are committed to youth leadership and engagement; diversity and inclusion; equity and excellence; and data-driven decision making. We are currently focused on holding youth-led community conversations about the 2019 YRBS data in order to identify community-wide priorities and initiatives. To ensure effective outreach, we train bilingual students as community interpreters to help present at community meetings and events. We are also educating local policy makers about ways to minimize access to tobacco and vaping products, providing safe, drug-free activities for teens, strengthening local transit options so that teens can get to these activities, preparing for the mayoral youth summit (a teen leadership conference that will includes sessions on substance use and mental health)..
