ASAP Community Coalition - With this application, the ASAP Community Coalition seeks to extend its work as a Drug Free Communities Support Program awardee for Years 6-10. ASAP plans to build on five years of DFC training and experience to continue addressing the youth substance use concerns of Dearborn and northern Dearborn Heights, Michigan. ASAP’s service area includes a significant Arab American population. Special efforts are made to engage the local Arab American community in ASAP activities, including offering translated prevention materials, staffing activities with Arabic-speaking employees or volunteers, and engaging members of the Arab American community as coalition sector representatives. Based on local data and input from coalition members, ASAP has identified tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drugs as the substances to be targeted by the Coalition. ASAP’s proposed objectives are tailored both to the community the coalition serves and the youth substance use challenges it faces. The Coalition will impact youth substance use by preparing parents to better address substance use and its root causes. Parents will learn skills for discussing prescription drug misuse and marijuana with their children. Sessions will be provided in English and Arabic, as needed. Parents and other community members will learn about Adverse Childhood Experiences and their connection to substance use. Training will also be provided on identifying opioid overdoses and administering naloxone to prevent overdose deaths. ASAP will broaden its impact by increasing participation in coalition membership and activities. Emphasis on coalition member recruiting will be placed on the Youth, Civic Volunteer, Faith, and Parent sectors. Coalition activities will include school-based programming to ensure significant youth participation. Parents will be engaged through PTA meetings and outreach with school administrators. ASAP will host educational webinars for other sector representatives to participate in coalition activity remotely. To reduce youth marijuana, tobacco, and prescription opioid use, coalition chapters at three local high schools will engage peers in social norming campaigns. These campaigns will challenge youth misconceptions about the prevalence of substance use among their peers. ASAP will also provide English and Arabic-language print materials and presentations on tobacco, marijuana, and prescription drugs at schools and school-based events for youth and parents. ASAP will work to reduce youth tobacco use by participating in tobacco vendor education and compliance check activities designed to limit youth access to tobacco. The coalition help change the consequences related to youth tobacco use by providing an educational opportunity to students caught using tobacco in school as an alternative to suspension. Youth ASAP members will engage peers by developing social media posts and videos to be shared by the coalition. To address youth prescription opioid misuse, ASAP will train local youth sports coaches on a student athlete prescription drug misuse tool-kit.
