Pickens Steppin It Up Coalition - Since, 2007 the Steppin’ It Up Coalition (SIUC) has been an integral part of the Pickens County community, with the Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County being listed as the fiscal agent for the coalition. The SIUC mission is to strengthen a generation of youth in Pickens County who are armed with the knowledge, motivation, and support to combat the temptations of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The primary goals are increasing capacity and reducing substance use among youth ages 12 -18 while educating on high risk the other residents in Pickens County. The school population consist of 8,517 middle and high school students. Bi-annually surveys with at the least 6th & 8th and 9th and 11th has now been done since 2018. With a population of 121,691, the over 70 strong SIUC coalition membership has planned and implemented successful programs and events over the last 12 years, strategically attacking issues that have been expressed through forums, focus groups, archival data and surveys. Presently, the SIUC has opened door to the local city and county administrator’s hearts by hosting a successful lunch and learn presenting on the importance of working together as a community to build a healthier community. This collaboration also has offered an upcoming opportunity of trainings and attendance as a 10 strong mixture group to national conference. This group consist of the county coroner, two mayors, law enforcement, SIUC coalition chair, religious sector chairman and prevention specialists. Presentations/meetings with the same group and their colleagues has been held and planned for future awareness campaigns. Sustainability is a top priority of the SIUC.
