[CORE: Immunization and VFC Cooperative Agreement] The Vaccine Preventable Disease Section at Minnesota Department of Health works to ensure that children and adults are properly immunized against vaccine-preventable disease, supplies vaccines for children who are eligible for the Vaccines for Children (VFC) program, monitors the state’s immunization rates, coordinates investigations and responses to outbreaks of vaccine-preventable diseases, and maintains and updates the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC). The Vaccine Management and Improvement Unit is responsible for ensuring public health staff visit each of the state’s nearly 800 sites enrolled in the VFC program every two years. We manage the distribution of vaccine to clinic sites enrolled in the VFC program, and make sure their storage and handling practices will safeguard valuable vaccine so it is effective in protecting patients. At clinic visits we also promote best practices in vaccine management, ensure that current VISs are being given to patients, and encourage practice improvement measures that include assessing clinic immunization rates. The MIIC Operations Unit maintains and enhances the Minnesota Immunization Information Connection (MIIC), Minnesota’s immunization information system. We work to make sure appropriate health care providers, schools, child care centers, and public health providers across the state have access to consolidated immunization records and other tools to support immunization practice, monitoring, and improvement, as well as disease outbreak response. The VPD Surveillance Unit is responsible for monitoring and reporting vaccine preventable diseases in Minnesota. In addition, we collaborate with local public health jurisdictions and community partners to provide disease prevention and control guidance, especially during outbreaks. In order to provide timely and relevant guidance, the VPD Surveillance Unit works collaboratively with the Immunization Program, the Public Health Laboratory, Communications staff, Local Public Health, Healthcare providers, and the community. The Education and Partnerships Unit works with internal and external partners to help provide education to health care providers and systems giving immunizations or responding to vaccine preventable disease. Our work includes coordination of adult and adolescent vaccines, school and childcare reporting, outreach to diverse communities, and coordination of pandemic flu planning. The Perinatal Hepatitis B Prevention Program works with more than 400 hepatitis B-positive women and their babies each year. Through partnerships with local public health jurisdictions, the program works with families to provide education and ensure infants receive appropriate follow up and care. During 2018, more than 99% of infants received post-exposure prophylaxis, 96% completed their vaccine series, and 85% received post-vaccination serologic testing.
