The New Jersey Department of Health (NJDOH) Vaccine-Preventable Disease Program (VPDP) works to reduce and eliminate the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases affecting children, adolescents, and adults by raising the immunization coverage rates of New Jersey’s citizens. The VPDP promotes timely vaccination through education and collaboration with public health and healthcare providers, such as the NJ Department of Education, NJ Department of Children and Families, VPDP’s health service grantees and through collaboration and funding of our statewide immunization coalition,the New Jersey Immunization Network (NJIN). Funding is being sought to support all operational aspects of the VPDP including: 1)Vaccines for Children Program (VFC)--VFC is a federally funded, state operated vaccine supply program that provides pediatric vaccines at no cost to doctors who serve children who might not otherwise be vaccinated because of inability to pay. There are approximately 1,000 medical offices enrolled in New Jersey’s VFC program. Additionally, through CDC discretionary funding, the program provides no cost vaccines to providers to service uninsured at risk adults and support outbreak response. 2)NJIIS--The New Jersey Immunization Information System (NJIIS) is a free, confidential, population-based online system that collects and consolidates vaccination data for New Jersey's children and adults. The NJIIS is the state’s official immunization registry per the Statewide Immunization Registry Act. The NJIIS maintains immunization data on New Jersey residents and consolidates immunization information reported from multiple providers into individual patient records to help ensure providers have accurate information for clinical decision support. There are over 4.5 million patients and 65 million doses currently in NJIIS. NJIIS also supports providers with robust resources such as vaccine forecasting and reminder recall systems. 3)Perinatal Hepatitis B P revention Program --Manages pregnant women who have current hepatitis B infection and their newborns in an effort to increase the percentage of infants completing the hepatitis B vaccination series and post-vaccination serologic testing (PVST). 4) Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit--The VPDP manages the cases of individuals that come in contact with and/or become infected with vaccine preventable diseases. Disease surveillance helps to ensure low incidence of vaccine-preventable diseases in order to protect communities from further spread. This component area is responsible for the collection and response to all State mandated vaccine preventable disease reports from local health departments and providers as well as responding to any outbreaks related to vaccine preventable diseases. 5) Population Coverage and Assessment--This component involves identifying and monitoring pockets of under-immunized children by using coverage estimates from assessments and surveys, in addition to estimating immunization coverage and exemption rates among New Jersey residents. This component area also monitors school compliance to immunization requirements in conjunction with 90 LHDs through evaluation of approximately 6,000 submitted status reports. 6) Health Education--The role of health education involves developing, implementing, monitoring, coordinating, and evaluating various immunization information, education, and awareness activities of the VPDP. 7) Adolescent and Adult Immunization--The adolescent and adult component serves to assess, identify plan, develop, and evaluate activities to improve immunization rates for adolescents and adults in New Jersey. Additionally, implementation of key partnerships and quality improvement/assessment efforts are spearheaded through this component. 8) Health Service Grantee Administration--Manage 10 agencies to reduce and eliminate the incidence of vaccine preventable diseases affecting children, adolescents, and adults.
