The Montana Department of Public Health and Human Services (DPHHS) is in the state capitol of Helena, Montana. The mission of DPHHS is to improve and protect the health, well-being, and self-reliance of all Montanans. The Montana Immunization Program is within Communicable Disease Control and Prevention Bureau within the Public Health and Safety Division (PHSD) in DPHHS. PHSD is a Public Health Accreditation Board (PHAB) Accredited Health Department. The Montana Immunization Program supports the DPHHS mission through working to prevent vaccine preventable disease among all residents throughout their life span by sharing information, managing data, providing education, giving clinical guidance, and overseeing distribution of publicly funded vaccines. This project will enable the Montana Immunization Program to continue our mission and support our vision for healthy Montana children, adolescents and adults, free of vaccine preventable diseases. The Montana Immunization Program supports the purchase and distribution of 8-10 million dollars’ worth of publicly funded vaccine each year. Because the VFC program is need based, strong accountability and program stewardship are essential. The Health Education Specialists in the program conduct site visits in public and private VFC provider clinics to evaluate clinic procedures for appropriate patient screening, and vaccine storage and handling policies. Assessing program performance is an essential organizational practice that requires use of multiple evidence-based data sources. The Montana Immunization Program will use these data sources to develop activities and requirements with our partners to ensure ongoing program improvement and the implementation of evidence-based practices to improve provider practice and raise immunization coverage rates. The Health Education Specialists also provide this project in approximately 25% of the clinics each year. Montana’s Immunization Information System (IIS), consolidates vaccination data from vaccine providers and provides tools for designing and sustaining effective immunization strategies. Staff provide training and support to clinics throughout the state to utilize the forecaster, reports, and vaccine ordering and accountability components as well as connect through HL7 data transfer. The Montana Immunization Program also partners with Public Health Emergency Preparedness to exercise efforts using vaccine as a part of a pandemic response, preparing to respond to vaccine preventable disease outbreaks. Collaboration with internal and external partners has and will continue to improve our ability to provide education, outreach, conduct assessments, and improve access to vaccines. The program plans to engage further with health systems, American Indian communities, and adult providers. We will continue to expand our clinical education offering and information and vaccine awareness campaigns available for the public.
