The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County (DOH-Miami-Dade) is the local health department operating under the Florida Department of Health (FDOH). DOH-Miami-Dade serves Miami-Dade County (MDC) that has an estimated 2.8 million residents. DOH-Miami-Dade is applying to the grant for the opportunity to build a sustainable public health infrastructure and strengthen efforts to hire, retain and sustain staff, while addressing challenges such as burnout, turnover and mental health and wellness. The goal is to support a public health workforce for the future, that can adapt to changes in the public health landscape and the ongoing threat of communicable disease. The COVID-19 pandemic caused many DOH-Miami-Dade staff to be redeployed to COVID-related duties, leaving other critical public health activities with reduced or suspended services. DOH-Miami-Dade with over 1000 employees, is looking to 1) Expand, improve, and accelerate prevention, and establish preparedness responses to public health concerns and emerging threats such as COVID-19; 2) Improve organizational systems and procedures which will increase the foundational capabilities; and 3) Increase availability and the use of public health data. The grant will help support our public health workforce and foundational capabilities to prepare our workforce and better serve our community.
