Behavioral Health Workforce Education and Training Program - Project Title: Strengthening Healthcare through Interprofessional Networks and Education (SHINE) Program Disciplines included in this proposal: Marriage and family therapy (MFT), psychiatric nursing (NP), occupational therapy (OT) Short description of your proposed project: We will develop, implement, and evaluate the SHINE Program, a tailored educational program to enhance the suicide prevention and crisis management (SPCM) training among a multidisciplinary group of Masters-level trainees (n = 48), direct clinical supervisors, direct service staff working at community partnerships, and behavioral health faculty and staff across the college. The SHINE Program will also include strategies to increase community partnerships through collaborative training and faculty development via professional development opportunities in the college and community. The SHINE Program is innovative in multiple ways, including use of virtual reality and simulation to support knowledge acquisition, skills development, and perceived competence, and the unique inclusion of the three disciplines that have not historically trained together. Needs you plan to address: We will increase the supply of behavioral health providers in the Philadelphia region who are more aptly prepared to work with youth at risk for mental health, trauma, and behavioral health disorders, by training students, supervisors and educators alike. SHINE graduates will have improved attitudes, knowledge, and skills surrounding suicide prevention and crisis management when working with youth at risk for mental health, trauma, or behavioral health disorders. Further, if successful in this initial phase, a wider integration and application of SHINE may allow for broader impacts on the behavioral health workforce in the Philadelphia region through buy-in from community partners and health professions faculty. The proposed services: The SHINE Program will consist of ten (10) online educational modules, four (4) live webinars, three (3) virtual reality sessions, and three (3) interprofessional standardized patient simulations, culminating in a behavioral health clinical placement at a SHINE-approved site, serving medically underserved areas. The population groups you plan to serve: Masters-level students in the marriage and family therapy, psychiatric nursing, and occupational therapy; direct service clinical supervisors representing these disciplines; staff employed at community partnering organizations; and faculty within the College of Nursing and Health Professions and across training programs for the disciplines represented in this application.
