The overall goal of this application is to allow the investigator (Diana Martinez, MD) to engage in new directions in research while providing mentorship to trainees pursuing careers in substance use disorders (SUD) research. The new directions in research include interventional psychiatry for SUD, as follows: 1) a clinical trial of transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) for cocaine use disorder; 2) a human laboratory self-administration trial of alcohol use disorder using TMS; and 3) an investigation of ketamine combined with mindfulness (delivered via a free mobile phone app) to address smoking cessation. The advantage of these types of procedures is that they could be implemented in a clinical setting should they have clinical efficacy. These new directions in research are combined with mentorship. Dr. Martinez is now the co-director of our institution’s T32 program (Translational Clinical Research Fellowship on Substance Use Disorders). In this capacity, Dr. Martinez is involved overseeing the daily management of the program. These responsibilities include matching fellows with mentors; assisting fellows with protocol submissions; reviewing and revising applications for pilot awards; reviewing and critiquing fellows’ grant submissions and ensuring that fellows meet milestones. Dr. Martinez is director of our T32’s Early Action pipeline program, which serves to increase interest among medical students in research careers dedicated to developing treatments for SUD.
