The awardee, Riverside Hospital, Inc. supports this three-year expansion of its Riverside Military Trauma Skills Program (RMTSP) in collaboration with regional military medical personnel, including Joint Base Langley-Eustis. Our shared goal is to expand Riverside Regional Medical Center’s (RRMC) military-civilian partnerships to enhance military readiness in critical care and support our community’s emergency preparedness. Our approach is to increase the capacity of our existing civilian-military partnership, through which military trauma surgeons are temporarily but fully embedded as part of Riverside’s emergency and trauma care services. As a Level II Trauma Center, we give them the opportunity to see a range of patients with traumatic injuries rarely seen at their local military medical facilities and therefore maintain their skills in critical care as an important element of wartime readiness. The objective is to increase the number of rotations for embedded military trauma surgeons at RRMC from four to 12 over the course of the grant period and obtain feedback to expand the program in the future to meet the needs of our military partners. This will include forging agreements with additional installations and branches of service. The anticipated outcomes are: 1) increased internal administrative capacity to support a growing RMTSP, 2) increased number of RRMC rotations available for embedded military surgeons, and 3) evaluation of current program and tested variations that may lead to additional partnerships in the future.
