Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program - Jefferson Hospital, operated by the Hospital Authority of Jefferson County and the City of Louisville, is a rural hospital serving Jefferson County and surrounding communities across Burke, Emanuel, Glascock, Jenkins, Johnson, McDuffie, Richmond, Warren, and Washington Counties in east-central Georgia. As an essential rural healthcare provider, Jefferson Hospital serves as a part of the area’s healthcare infrastructure by providing emergency, inpatient, outpatient, surgical, diagnostic, behavioral health, therapies, primary care, women’s health and other essential healthcare services. The Rural Nursing Workforce Coverage Initiative is designed as an immediate workforce stabilization strategy that complements separate recruitment and retention efforts aimed at building a sustainable long-term workforce. By maintaining adequate nursing coverage and preserving operational capacity, Jefferson Hospital will continue serving as a reliable healthcare provider for rural communities, helping sustain access to essential services and reducing the risk of service reductions or hospital closure. The Rural Nursing Workforce Coverage Initiative will support Jefferson hospital’s ability to maintain essential healthcare services by addressing immediate nursing workforce shortages through contract nursing coverage. Rural hospitals face ongoing challenges related to the recruitment and availability of qualified healthcare professionals, creating staffing vulnerabilities that can affect operational stability, patient access, and the sustainability of hospital services. Without adequate clinical staffing, rural hospitals may face increased risks of reducing services, limiting access to care, or experiencing financial and operational challenges that threaten long-term viability. Project funding will support contract nurses to maintain appropriate clinical coverage during periods of workforce shortages. These supplemental nursing resources will strengthen the hospital’s ability to continue providing safe, timely, and high-quality care while reducing strain on existing staff and supporting continuity of essential healthcare services.
