Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program - Wiregrass Medical Center (WMC) is a Critical Access Hospital serving Geneva County and surrounding rural communities in southeast Alabama. Located within a federally designated Medically Underserved Population (MUP) and Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA), WMC is the primary source of hospital care for many residents who face significant barriers to healthcare, including provider shortages, geographic isolation, transportation limitations, and economic hardship. As a rural hospital operating under increasing financial pressures, WMC must modernize critical infrastructure to maintain safe, reliable, and high-quality healthcare services. Funding through the Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program will support two essential technology modernization projects: replacement of the hospital's obsolete Picture Archiving and Communication System (PACS) and installation of a modern digital nurse call system. The current PACS no longer meets the clinical, operational, interoperability, or cybersecurity requirements of modern healthcare. Replacing the legacy system with a secure cloud-hybrid enterprise platform will improve diagnostic image access, strengthen care coordination through secure electronic image sharing, expand access to remote specialty consultation, reduce technology-related downtime, and enhance protection of protected health information through advanced cybersecurity features. The existing mechanical nurse call system limits communication between patients and caregivers, delays response times, and reduces nursing workflow efficiency. A modern nurse call platform will enable direct patient-to-caregiver communication, improve response times to urgent patient needs, enhance patient safety, streamline clinical workflows, and support the hospital's nursing workforce. Together, these projects will improve the quality, safety, and efficiency of healthcare delivery while strengthening the hospital's operational resilience. Expected outcomes include faster diagnostic decision-making, improved coordination with regional providers and specialists, enhanced cybersecurity, improved nursing response times, greater workflow efficiency, and higher patient satisfaction. Rural Hospital Provider Assistance Program funding will allow Wiregrass Medical Center to complete these critical infrastructure improvements that cannot reasonably be financed through routine operating revenue alone. These investments will preserve access to essential healthcare services and strengthen the hospital's ability to provide safe, timely, and coordinated care for rural residents throughout Geneva County and the surrounding region.
