Metropolitan Family Health Network, Inc, (MFHN) has been a leader in Hudson County, NJ since their incorporation in 2006 and plays an integral role in providing valuable primary and preventive care to the underserved including adult and pediatric medical services, obstetrics and gynecology, dental, integrated behavioral health services, and access to low-cost medications through their 340B pharmacy program. MFHN provided service to 13,000 individuals and managed over 40,000 visits in 2023 (UDS 2023). MFHN has two locations within the community: the main site at 935 Garfield Avenue in Jersey City and 5300 Bergenline Avenue in West New York, NJ. In addition to its primary services, MFHN serves a growing number of homeless individuals at its main site in Jersey City as it searches for a new independent location for its Healthcare for the Homeless program. MFHN is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that receives financial support from the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services and the New Jersey Department of Health & Senior Services. MFHN is a member of the New Jersey Primary Care Association, accredited by the Joint Commission and recognized by the NCQA as a Patient Centered Medical Home. In 2023 MFHN’s diverse patient population included 1,221 Asians, 14 Native Hawaiian/Other Pacific Islanders, 5,202 Black/African Americans, 5,467 Hispanics, 37 American Indian/Alaska Natives, 518 Whites, 40 patients of more than one race and 338 patients that were unreported or refused to report race (UDS 2023). Hudson County, New Jersey has the least access to mental health care in the state. There are 1,080:1 residents for every mental health care provider compared to the state average of 340:1 (Countyhealthrankings.org). The State of New Jersey Department of Human Services Inventory and Needs Assessment for New Jersey Behavioral Health ranks Hudson County as one of the primary counties needing alcohol and drug treatment with a total need of 44,279 individuals in need. MFHN will increase the number of patients receiving mental health and SUD/MOUD services by allocating more treatment space and hiring additional behavioral health clinicians. MFHN expects to provide the expanded service to 1,250 patients and manage over 3,000 visits at its existing locations and through collaborative arrangements with community-based behavioral health and SUD agencies. Project funding will support the call to action by improving vital parts of our community’s public health system to expand access to affordable behavioral healthcare in Hudson County, NJ.
