In 1978, a satellite health clinic sponsored by the San Antonio Based Southwest Migrant Association in Poteet, Texas, provided medical services for residents of Atascosa County, Texas. In 1981, Atascosa Rural Health Initiative formed and moved its clinic to the old hospital that had closed in Pleasanton. Atascosa Health Center, Inc., (AHC) has served south-central Texas communities and provides a wide array of health services, including primary health care, dental care, behavioral health/substance use disorder/MOUD services, and enabling services. It also has a Class A pharmacy. AHC has grown from one modest healthcare delivery site in Pleasanton, Atascosa County, to a five-county, seven delivery site organization. The counties served by AHC include Atascosa, Live Oak, Karnes, McMullen, and Wilson. Health care needs. Residents in the service area have higher incidences of health disparities relative to national severe benchmarks in areas where prevention is critical to care. Individuals in the service area have a higher age-adjusted diabetes prevalence, obesity, and hypertension rates among adults. All five counties have a Medically Underserved Area Designation. In addition, all counties have a behavioral health and medical Health Professional Shortage Area designation. Finally, all but Wilson County have a Health Professional Shortage Area for dental health. From the 2024 Community Health Needs Assessment, the top two leading causes of death for Atascosa, Karnes, McMullen, and Wilson are Diseases of the Heart and Malignant Neoplasms. Heart disease Mortality has increased year over year for Live Oak and Wilson counties. Services to be provided. Atascosa Health Center provides the full array of primary care, dental and mental health services in the service area. AHC has seven health centers that serve the cities of Pleasanton, Lytle, Karnes City, Three Rivers, Tilden, Floresville, and Poteet, Texas. Three health care sites are located in Atascosa County, and one each in Karnes, McMullen, and Wilson Counties. All seven sites are credentialed for the Veterans Choice Program that allows eligible Veterans to receive care from a non-VA facility, connecting them to timely and convenient access to health care, instead of waiting for a VA appointment or traveling long distances to a VA facility. All sites also have HPV immunizations through a collaboration with the American Cancer Society to improve initiation and completion rates. In addition, all sites screen for Hepatitis-C through a collaboration with UTSA Health Science Center. Also, through AHC’s Texas State supported programs, each site screens for breast and cervical cancer.
