Strong Futures Virginia - The Strong Futures Virginia project will expand Ballad Health’s Strong Futures model into Norton, Virginia, through a 35-bed, co-occurring capable ASAM Level 3.1 Clinically Managed Low-Intensity Residential treatment program for pregnant, postpartum, and parenting women ages 18 and older. The program will allow women to receive substance use treatment in a structured residential setting while remaining with their minor children when clinically and developmentally appropriate. The facility will be licensed through the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services and will serve the LENOWISCO and Cumberland Plateau Health Districts, including Lee, Wise, Scott, Dickenson, Russell, Buchanan, and Tazewell counties and the City of Norton. The population of focus includes women with a substance use disorder diagnosis, with priority for pregnant and parenting women and additional priority for women who use injectable substances. The service area includes an estimated 181,000 residents, including 88,139 females, and continues to experience elevated neonatal abstinence syndrome rates, overdose-related emergency department visits, overdose deaths, and opioid-related costs tied to children and criminal justice involvement. Strong Futures Virginia is projected to serve 543 unduplicated individuals over the five-year project period, beginning with 52 individuals during the partial first year and increasing annual service capacity as the program becomes fully operational. Core services will include group therapy, individual counseling, peer support, psychoeducation, parenting support, life skills development, care coordination, recovery support, and referrals to prenatal, postpartum, pediatric, behavioral health, medical, and community-based services.
