Training to expand the capacity for EMS to provide outside-of-hospital treatments, trauma informed care, and referrals and warm handoffs to support substance use disorder recovery in rural Alaska. - Copper River Emergency Medical Services Council, Inc. (CREMS) will partner with the Public Health Institute Bridge Center program to recruit and train both paid and volunteer EMS personnel in Alaska’s rural Copper River Census Area. The project will provide no less than six (6) EMS certification courses and four (4) in-depth local in-person trainings including train-the-trainer pathways during the project period for EMS personnel and EMS Instructors on opioid overdose reversal medications, field initiation of buprenorphine, trauma-informed care, and connection to substance use disorder treatment. The primary service population is paid and volunteer EMS personnel in the Copper River Census Area. The area covers 24,692 square miles and has 2,617 residents living in 19 small communities, including eight federally recognized Alaska Native Tribes. The region has one centrally located paid ambulance crew and more than 20 volunteer EMS responders. The project goal is to increase the ability of rural EMS personnel to respond to opioid overdose and behavioral health emergencies and connect patients with treatment. During the two-year project period, CREMS will recruit at least five additional EMS personnel, provide four qualifying EMS courses, train 40 unduplicated EMS personnel, develop one local health system coordination plan with referral and care transition procedures, and create or update procedures for reporting overdoses to the appropriate public health agencies.
