Empowering Tribal Communities: Enhancing Access to Medications and Comprehensive Services for Opioid Use Disorder Treatment and Recovery Support - The Kewa Family Wellness Center Program is applying for funding to implement a comprehensive initiative designed to address the critical need for culturally sensitive substance misuse prevention and mental health promotion services within the Santo Domingo Pueblo community. Located in New Mexico between Albuquerque and Santa Fe along the Rio Grande, Santo Domingo Pueblo is home to over 3,500 individuals, primarily American Indian, confronting significant economic challenges. Over a five-year period, our program aims to serve approximately 830 unduplicated individuals, focusing on treatment, recovery support, prevention, and harm reduction services. Our approach is rooted in collaboration and community engagement. We prioritize the development of partnerships with local healthcare providers, social service agencies, and community organizations to amplify our impact and enhance support networks. By forging these connections, we aim to leverage existing resources and expertise while ensuring that our services are accessible and responsive to community needs. Furthermore, we emphasize workforce training in culturally competent care, equipping staff and community providers with the skills necessary to effectively address substance misuse and mental health issues within the community. Central to our program is the implementation of culturally informed prevention initiatives. We will disseminate culturally relevant communication messages and launch school-based programs targeting stigma and substance misuse. These efforts are complemented by regular educational sessions covering topics such as stress management, healthy relationships, financial literacy, and nutrition for community members of all ages. Additionally, we will establish accessible Medication for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) treatment programs and create a welcoming environment for clients, removing barriers to treatment and support. Through these comprehensive strategies tailored to the specific needs of the Santo Domingo Pueblo community, the Kewa Family Wellness Center Program seeks to significantly reduce substance misuse rates and promote mental health resilience. Our program serves as a model for addressing similar disparities among American Indian and Alaska Native populations nationwide. By investing in our initiative, funders have the opportunity to support innovative, community-driven solutions that prioritize cultural relevance, collaboration, and long-term impact in the fight against substance misuse and mental health challenges.
