The Absentee Shawnee of Oklahoma seeks to fashion an inclusive and integrated opioid and
methamphetamine treatment, prevention, and recovery support system to reduce and prevent overdoses and strengthen MOUD, OUD, and methamphetamine services to rural non-reservation (McGirt) American Indians who reside within the area of central Oklahoma served by the tribe. The Absentee Shawnee Tribe will build upon a long record of devotion to the welfare of area AI citizens and its relationships with communities, providers, health facilities, and among substance abuse treatment and recovery agencies to craft an undertaking that will ultimately serve to advance the delivery of those services, practices, and cultural experiences that reduce overdoses and assure appropriate opioid (methamphetamine) use disorder treatment, prevention, and recovery services for American Indians within the service area. The aim of the New Horizons project is to reduce overdoses and expand MOUD, opioid abuse treatment, prevention, and recovery support services available to area American Indians. Based on the public health model and utilizing the evidenced-based MI and MET/CBT, the project shall provide a secure foundation for delivering and sustaining effective, efficient, and culturally appropriate opioid treatment and recovery services. This goal will both expand and enhance the continuum of care for substance abuse services, blend appropriately with current approaches, reduce the prevalence of opioids and their negative impact on health, increase abstinence, and reduce costly health utilization.
