Kennesaw State University Medications for Opioid Use Disorder Training Program Project Abstract Summary
Kennesaw State University (KSU) Wellstar College of Health and Human Services Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) Training Program (KSU-MOUD) will partner with the University of Pittsburgh Program Evaluation and Research Unit (PERU)to integrate MOUD and other substance use disorder (SUD) education into the KSU nursing curricula to train future nurses to deliver effective patient MOUD treatment within diverse clinical settings.
The program's population of focus is KSU’s graduate nursing students, including nurse practitioner (NP), nurse educator (NE), and nursing administration (NA) students. KSU’s graduate nursing student population in Fall 2021 was 175students, of which 105 (60%) were White, 34 (19.4%) Black, 19 (10.9%) Asian, 6 (3.4%)Hispanic/Latino, 1(0.6%,) American Indian/Alaska Native, and 10 (5.7%) undeclared. Students were 92.6% female, 7.4% male. The age range of students was 24 to 62 years old. The geographic catchment area includes graduate nursing students living primarily in the state of Georgia(GA)(98.3%). Approximately 30% of the students lived in Cobb County, where residents are mainly White. The geographic catchment area includes graduate nursing students living in Cobb County, GA. Cobb County residents are mainly White (62.4%) with a lower percentage of Black residents (28.8%) compared to GA. Cobb County residents have a higher median household income ($80,830) than GA ($61,224), and a higher proportion of persons possessing at least a bachelor’s degree (48.4%) than GA(32.2%). The median age of Cobb County residents in 2019 was 37.3 years. Adults (aged +18) who identified their sexual orientation as LGBTQ+ represent 4.5% of the GA population. The majority of students (70%) live in counties considered to be medically underserved.
KSU-MOUD program goals include Goal 1) By Sept. 2025, the KSU-MOUD program will increase the number of NPs trained on MOUD to meet x-waiver requirements by 120 for expanded capacity to provide effective MOUD treatment to patients in GA. Goal 2) By Feb. 2023,the Executive Committee(EC)/KSU will establish an instructional team and identify resources to implement 3 hours of additional SUD education within the NP, NA, and NE curricula. Goal 3) By Jan. 2023, the EC will develop an integration plan to implement the additional 31 hours of MOUD (x-waiver) and SUD education into the existing NP, NA, and NE curricula. Goal 4) By Sept. 2025, the EC/KSU will ensure that 100% of trained NP, NA, and NE students receive clinical observation experience with MOUD providers. Goal 5) Beginning Nov. 2022, KSU/PERU will ensure all required (GPRA) and supplemental data is collected and reported accurately to evaluate the curriculum’s impact on students and the KSU curriculum. 6) By Sept. 2025, the EC will develop a sustainability plan that includes ongoing MOUD and SUD training integration at KSU post-grant. Goal 7) By Sept. 2025, the EC will develop, implement, and support MOUD-focused curricula as part of a residency or fellowship training program.
