Project Abstract Summary
Through the Tohono O’odham Opioid Response Program (TOR), the Tohono O’odham community members and their families, will become aware of the appropriate use of opioids, the dangers of misuse, the dangers of illicit methamphetamine and cocaine use, and have access to culturally appropriate, trauma informed, compassionate continuum of care for treatment, crisis interventions, re-entry and recovery support. Will reduce barriers and stigma for those needing services, and will enable the people to practice strategies for supporting the spiritual, physical, emotional and mental wellness for themselves and their network of family and friends.
Using, Evidenced Based Practices and culturally appropriate treatment modalities to generate the best possible outcomes, and educate and elevate awareness for the people. Learning from feedback, and data collection, to create actions which respond quickly to overcome barriers. Delivery will be though prevention, crisis outreach, detox, medically assisted treatment, re-entry, residential, and the full spectrum of outpatient services, (psychiatry, intensive outpatient, standard outpatient, aftercare and peer support), traditional medicine, and acudetox services. This will be accomplished through meeting the following goals and objectives;
GOAL 1: Develop TOR Program to better support TOR clients. Objective 1.1 Hire & Train Staff. Objective 1.2 Convene Tohono O’odham Nation TOR Task Force quarterly to guide the Program activities and develop a strategic action plan to include first responders, prevention services, and those with lived experience. Objective 1.3: Assess Program effectiveness and impact on the tribe.
GOAL 2: Increase access to treatment specific to opioid misuse, methamphetamine, cocaine and other stimulants on the Tohono O’odham Nation. Objective 2.1: Continue culturally relevant evidence and practice-based service delivery models to facilitate positive treatment outcomes and long-term recovery. Objective 2.2: Continue collaborating with service providers to identify and decrease barriers for patient access to treatment, patient engagement and retention in treatment and recovery services.
GOAL 3: Increase awareness of opioids, opioid misuse, methamphetamine, cocaine and other stimulants through education and prevention programming and messaging. Develop strategies to purchase and disseminate the opioid overdose antidote, naloxone, and provide training on its use to first responders and other tribal members. Objective 3.1: Develop and implement effective prevention strategies. Objective 3.2: Implement strategies to decrease the incidence and consequences of unsafe opioid use. Educate for the safe and appropriate use of opioids. Objective 3.3: Develop strategies to purchase and disseminate the naloxone.
