Serving Children and Adults in Need (SCAN), Inc. is proposing to implement the Familias Unidas (Families United) in Webb County, located in South Texas to serve adolescents (ages 12-18) and transitional aged youth (ages 16-25) and their families/primary caregivers with substance use disorders and/or co-occurring substance use and mental disorders. The project is proposing to serve 150 youth per year for a total of 750 youth for the entire grant period. The target area is composed over 95% Mexican American with severe substance use disorder needs when compared with the total population of Texas. The Project will utilize the Adolescent-Community Reinforcement Approach (A-CRA) along with the Assertive Continuing Care (ACC), a parenting component from the Family Support Network (FSN) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT). ACT will address the co-occurring needs of adolescents and transitional age youth. To address the prevention and messaging needs of children and non-using adolescents, the project will utilize the Curriculum Bases Support Groups curriculum (CBSG) to help children and youth who do not have a substance use disorders make healthy choices including abstaining from the use of tobacco, alcohol, and other substances. To address the needs of individuals using tobacco products, the project will utilize the Council for Tobacco Treatment Program to provide tobacco cessation treatment services. Pregnant adolescents and women will get more intensive tobacco cessation treatment using CDC recommendations. The Goals of the Project are: 1) to provide a comprehensive, family-centered, trauma-informed, evidence-based, coordinated and integrated outpatient system of care to meet the complex needs of the population of focus; 2) to integrate tobacco screening, assessment, prevention and smoking cessation treatment as a standard of practice to reduce tobacco use among the population of focus; 3) to improve family and participant functioning by demonstrating positive treatment and prevention outcomes at discharge and 6-month follow-up; 4) to increase the quality of interventions and services by integrating feedback from community stakeholders and participants into the implementation and evaluation of the project; 5) to deliver evidence-based interventions with a high degree of fidelity and meet cultural/linguistic needs; and 6) to collect ongoing quality assurance data to promote the best possible clinical outcomes, timely reporting, and program improvement.
