The Banyan Community Health Center, Inc. (Banyan or BCHC) and partners OIC of South Florida, Inc. (OIC) and CORE Services Group, Inc. (CORE; together, the Partners) propose the Banyan Works (BW), which is designed to implement evidence-based and best practices to support individuals in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment and recovery to live independently and gain full participation in the workforce. The BWP will serve 480 adults with SUD over the five year project period (80 in Year 1; 100 in Years 2-5). The population of focus (POF) is the members of the primarily low-income Latino population of Broward and Miami-Dade counties, Florida who struggle with SUD. The POF also struggles with more limited educational attainment and less English proficiency that the general population. Evidence indicates that the two reasons for which substance users are most likely to leave treatment or relapse are lack of livable wage employment and the lack of safe, stable housing. BW combines state of the art, evidence based residential SUD treatment, prevocational and vocational training leading to industry recognized, entry level credentials, job placement at a livable wage and post residential treatment sober housing leading to independent living. When combined with effective, evidence based SUD treatment, livable wage employment and stable housing are the two significantly interrelated environmental factors that best predict long term recovery. BW partners will work together to integrate employability and vocational training into three of Banyans residential SUD treatment programs (one of which is a residential reentry center) that serve a primarily Latino population. CORE will provide an expandable base of sober housing in which Project participants can live, practice independent living skills and save money until they are ready to live independently. BW is unique in its integration of environmental factors (vocational services, job placement and housing) with the evidence based practices of medication assisted therapy (MAT), cognitive behavior therapy, motivational interviewing, peer recovery support services/recovery coaching, Tools to Quit and Quit Smoking Now, and the trauma treatments Seeking Safety and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. Though Banyans current outcomes with respect to SUD treatment exceed the average outcomes (for program completion and length of time in abstinence/sobriety) in Florida as a whole (54 percent vs. 43 percent), BWs goal is to further improve on that record by achieving at least a 70 percent long term recovery rate and demonstrating that this unique integration of SUD treatment, vocational services and supportive housing can overcome the difficulties commonly faced by Latinos (and others) seeking to recover from substance use disorders.
