The goal of the Cook County Health Acupuncture in the ED (AED) is to 1) Reduce opioid prescriptions in the ED by 20% in 3 years by creating a safe prescribing model; 2) Implement acupuncture as an additional pain intervention integrated into the ED in presenting headache and jaw pain patients by 10%; and 3) Reduce Emergency Department admission rate by 5%. The AED project team, comprised of an acupuncturist, ED physician, and care coordinators, will work together to reduce opioid usage in CCH’s ED. The AED project aims to serve 250 unique patients per year with a total of 750 patients throughout the 3 years of funding. CCH is seeking $500,000 per year for 3 years to implement acupuncture in the ED as an alternative pain management for patients presenting with headaches and jaw pain. Objective 1.1 Create a needs assessment to identify painful conditions frequently treated in the ED; Objective 1.2 Improve opioid prescription guidelines in the ED; Objective 1.3 Train all physicians and practitioners in opioid guidelines with a mandated annual training; Objective 2.1 Increase screening and assessment of pain in ED; Objective 2.2 Implement acupuncture in ED; Objective 2.3 Evaluate opioid use, pain score, and patient satisfaction; Objective 3.1 Hire care coordinators to schedule patient follow up appointments for pain management in acupuncture clinics; and Objective 3.2 Care coordinators will also schedule patient follow up appointments in the appropriate venue to treat root cause of the pain (primary care, dental, etc). Emergency departments in Chicago are caring for an ever increasing number of people presenting with substance use disorders (SUDs) and behavioral health problems. In 2016, CCH saw more than 5,000 opioid-related emergency department visits, up from 1,000 visits in 2006. The most common pain conditions identified in CCH’s ED in 2019 are headaches, including migraines, (5,979) and jaw pain (238) which are typically treated with medication. Acupuncture has been an evidence based model in use since the implementation of integrative medicine.
