Development of a medication assisted treatment (MAT) curriculum at the LECOM medical school to increase the number of physicians who can treat patients with opioid user disorder (OUD) - The Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) graduates hundreds of students each year in Pennsylvania and Florida, two states with opioid use death rates higher than the national average. Using outcomes-based assessment and continual improvement, LECOM will develop a Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) curriculum for 4th year medical students to ultimately increase the number of primary care physicians that can apply for the Drug Addiction Treatment Act waiver and prescribe buprenorphine and other approved treatments for patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). Consistent with the mission of LECOM, the physician students' MAT training will also entail collaboration, compassion, the screening for co-morbidities and an understanding of the many variables associated with OUD. Graduating the largest number of student physicians in the country--many of whom will become primary care physicians--LECOM is well positioned and determined to enhance its curriculum in order to impact the opioid epidemic.
