The Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan (SCIT) Healing to Wellness Court (HTWC), a State of Michigan Certified Drug Court, will expand services to include a family component to treatment court. The expanded Healing to Wellness Court will serve Tribal families with children whose parents have a substantiated report of child abuse or neglect due to Substance Use Disorders (SUD's), before a formal petition for dependency is filed. The goal of the program is to strengthen the capacity of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe of Michigan to provide Healing to Wellness Court services to Tribal families by providing 20 additional slots, earmarked to service parents who are within the Anishinabeg Children and Family Services system due to Substance Use Disorders. The Healing to Wellness Court, with the expansion grant, will serve a total of 50 clients per year, or 250 over the course of the project period. The objectives of the program include decreasing Tribal deaths due to opioid addiction, a problem that has reached an epidemic level within Native nations. This will be accomplished through the provision of Medicated Assisted Treatment services within our SCIT's Nimkee Memorial Wellness Clinic. The Tribe will be working closely with Recovery Pathway's, who will provide training, assessment of clients, and telehealth services to our rural community. Through the provision of these lifesaving services, SCIT's other objective to decrease the number of formal dependency petitions in which children are removed from their homes due to parental substance use disorders will be strived for. Additional services that will strengthen our families are General Education Development Diploma (GED) testing services, HIV/AID's rapid testing for early detection of health issues, and transportation to clients in order to ensure their ability to participate in all recovery activities.
