Clark Atlanta University (CAU) proposes HBCU C.A.R.E.S. (Career, Awareness, Recruitment, Engagement, Services) for Behavioral Health as an HBCU Center of Excellence for Behavioral Health to serve as a hub for 102 Historically Black Colleges and Universities to (1) increase the number of racial/ethnic minority students prepared to enter behavioral health careers; (2) increase student awareness of behavioral health careers; (3) assist students to continue their education in behavioral health; and (4) create strategies, resources, and collaborations for recruitment and retention of minority students in behavioral health majors and careers for HBCUs and other organizations. HBCU C.A.R.E.S. will offer paid internship opportunities for 100 racial/ethnic minority students in behavioral health graduate programs at HBCUs in agencies serving underserved or vulnerable populations. The 100 students will also act as ambassadors and deliver workshops and individual career chats at their respective colleges to educate undergraduates about behavioral health careers/majors and HBCU C.A.R.E.S. Additionally, HBCU C.A.R.E.S. will form a collaborative website and partner with behavioral health faculty at HBCUs to create an advisory council. The project will incorporate its services throughout participating HBCUs with a focus on outreach to engage, recruit, and educate minority students about behavioral health careers, majors, and internship opportunities. HBCU C.A.R.E.S. staff will support 100 graduate interns to create and facilitate behavioral health educational seminars/workshops to increase awareness about, and recruit minority students for behavioral health majors and careers. These educational seminars will be created with feedback from professors in behavioral health at participating HBCUs and those professors will help comprise the HBCU C.A.R.E.S. Advisory Council. The HBCU C.A.R.E.S. center will develop a comprehensive behavioral health career website to house information about behavioral health majors at all HBCUs, behavioral health careers, certification/licensure requirements for the behavioral health careers, webinars, and informational media from current minority students and professionals in behavioral health fields. All website information will work in conjunction with the ambassadors and Advisory Council to increase enrollments and knowledge about careers in the behavioral health of minority students. An experienced evaluator will oversee collection of data and analysis of outcomes. The evaluator will report findings to the Project Director, Project Manager, and the Advisory Council, as well as SAMHSA, to refine HBCU C.A.R.E.S. and improve outcomes.
