Program Summary:
WestCare Foundation, Inc. (WC) in partnership with the Promise Zone Coalition will comprehensively work together to implement evidence-based strategies, policies, and programs that will PREVENT AND REDUCE YOUTH USE OF ALCOHOL (especially among ages 12-20) over a 4-year period who reside in the Eastside Promise Zone of San Antonio, TX. The STOP Project will prevent underage use of alcohol and reduce the related juvenile crime among 200 youth annually and 800 over a four-year period ages 12-20 years that live, work, and play in the Eastside Promise Zone.
The population of focus are youth between the ages of 12 and 20 who live within and attend a middle school, high school, or institution of higher education in the Eastside Promise Zone. The current population in this target area is 46% Hispanic, 44% African American, 8% Anglo, and 2% other. It is 48.3% male and 51.7% female. With regard to age, 23.7% are ages 5-19, 25.3% are ages 20-39, 29.4% are ages 40-64, and 12.7% are 65 and older. Eighty-six percent (86%) of people living in this area speak English, 48% speak English and Spanish, 14% speak Spanish or another language only. The average household income is $14,864 and the 19 census tracts have an overall poverty rate of 35.02% with a current unemployment rate of 11%. The most impoverished census tract (1306) in San Antonio is in this area. Additionally, six census tracts, which contain 29.6% of the area’s total population, exceed the overall national and state poverty rates.
