San Marcos Youth Alcohol Prevention Campaign - The San Marcos Youth Alcohol Prevention campaign is a bilingual, culturally competent campaign to reduce underage drinking in the City of San Marcos, with an emphasis on underage college students. This campaign builds upon the current underage drinking work of the San Marcos Prevention Coalition. The campaign will serve approximately 20,000 youth and young adults ages 12-20 years old living, working, and studying in the City of San Marcos.
Goal #1 of the campaign is to assess the retail environment of all the city's off-sale alcohol licensees. By June 30, 2023, staff, youth leaders and youth will survey all 56 off-sale alcohol licensees, produce a report on the results, and present the report to the Youth Commission, City Council, and CIty's Student and Neighborhood Relations Committee.
Goal #2 of the campaign is to work collaboratively with off-sale alcohol licensees to implement responsible and best retail practices. The objective is by September 30, 2026 to reduce 11th grade past 30-day alcohol use by 15%, as measured by the San Marcost Unified School District's California Healthy Kids Survey, through the reduction and/or elimination of alcopops at 56 off-sale alcohol retailers.
Goal #3 is to reduce youth access to alcohol. The objective is by September 30, 2026 to reduce 11th graders' access to alcohol by 20%, as measured by the San Marcos Unified School District's California Healthy Kids Survey, through the completion and release of a San Marcos Teen Alcohol Access Report on where and how high school age youth access alcohol, developed using survey data and gathering compelling stories by 50 youth.
