The Bison Resiliency Coalition is a project proposed by Community Health and Development, a department at Salish Kootenai College, by training college interns as recovery coaches, intervention facilitators and media experts to prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance misuse and its related problems on campus and the surrounding community. The project will begin with a comprehensive community assessment process originating from a work group made up of campus and community gatekeepers. The work group will collect both primary and secondary data to determine the primary substances being misused, available resources, gaps, and best practices. The following goals and objectives outline the project activities: • Goal 1: Strengthen prevention capacity and infrastructure at SKC and the Flathead Indian Reservation • Objective 1.1: By the end of the 2nd quarter, CHD will form a workgroup of at least 6 campus and community stakeholders to determine top substances affecting students and community, identify assets and resources, gaps in services and set action priorities. • Objective 1.2: By the end of the 3rd quarter, the work group will examine data and prepare a strategic plan to reduce the progression of the substances being misused, related problems, interventions, training needs and submit to SAMHSA for approval. • Objective 1.3: By the end of the 3rd quarter, CHD will recruit at least 2 peer educators who will undergo at least 3 relevant trainings to prepare for implementation of prevention interventions identified in the strategic plan. • Goal 2: Reduce the progression of substance misuse and its related problems by implementing a combination of evidence-based programs, policies and practices. • Objective 2.1: Select at least two EBI group level interventions and implement with at least 100 participants per intervention, per year, before the end of the second and consecutive years of the project, for at least 1000 participants by the end of 5 years. • Objective 2.2: Disseminate prevention messages, resource information and best practices through at least 3 social media platforms beginning in the second year and consecutive years of the project. The project is designed to address the 5 foundational elements of the Tribal Behavioral Health Agenda: Historical and Generational Trauma; Socio-cultural-ecological Approach; Prevention and Recovery support; Behavioral Health Systems and Support; and to promote National Awareness and Visibility through extensive social media. Located on a vibrant tribal college campus, The Bison Resiliency Coalition will contribute to student well-being and workforce development by providing skills-building opportunities.
