Oklahoma City Indian Clinic (OKCIC) is the largest urban Indian clinic in the United States, with more than 20,000 active patients, most of whom live in central Oklahoma. Through this program, OKCIC will help prevent the onset and reduce the progression of substance abuse and its related problems, while strengthening prevention capacity and infrastructure at the community level. A nonprofit tribal organization, OKCIC is a trusted medical home to American Indians (AIs). Research shows that AIs have the highest rates of Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) and are more likely to need alcohol or illicit drug treatment than persons of any age, gender, income level or place of residence. In persons ages 12 or older, 12.3% of AIs reported illicit drug use in the past month, compared to 10.5% of blacks, and 9.5% of whites and 8.8% of Hispanics. These data are confirmed at our clinic, where providers report seeing an increase in OUDs and alcohol abuse, specifically, across all ages. Over the next three years, OKCIC proposes to engage in a Strategic Prevention Framework project that will engage the community - both AI and those organizations serving AIs. Together with new and existing partners, OKCIC will lead the effort to: assess the problems; increase capacity; plan interventions; implement those interventions; and evaluate the outcomes. Results will be disseminated to other professionals and findings will help shape the Clinic’s strategic priorities moving forward. OKCIC has the experience and the capacity to successfully fulfill the goals set forth for this project.
