Youth Substance Abuse Prevention Project: A Project of the Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation
The Southern Arizona AIDS Foundation (SAAF) and community partners, including middle and high schools, as well as existing youth-let coalitions propose to build a sustainable, high-capacity community prevention infrastructure in Tucson/Pima County, AZ to prevent and reduce substance use, targeting alcohol and nicotine use, by reaching young people ages 12-20.
Population to be served: Risk factors that impact Pima County youth and health disparities specifically around racial/ethnic minority and LGBTQ youth were identified through federal and local data sets, surveys, assessments, and surveillance. Concern areas include: a) In Pima County, almost 25% of youth in grades 8, 10, and 12, reported having had a drink sometime in the past 30 days, meaning that the number of youth reporting alcohol use in Pima county was higher than the state average; b)20% of Pima County youth reported nicotine use in the past 30 days; c) Rates of substance abuse are 2-4 times higher among LGBTQ youth with reported higher rates of alcohol and cigarette use.
Strategies/Interventions: 1) Utilize Botvin Life-Skills Training with middle school age, high school age, and transition youth to reduce substance use and risky behaviors, increase resiliency, and develop youth leadership skills; 2) Train SAAF staff and partnering youth-serving organizations to implement CRAFFT-N+, a brief substance abuse and nicotine screening tool; 3) Employ environmental strategies including a social marketing campaign to increase awareness among parents, trusted adults and families of prevention education and early intervention services; 4) Build a broad sector coalition addressing underage alcohol and nicotine use among young people ages 12-20; 5) Provide Professional Development and Capacity Building workshops to service providers, school staff, educators, and trusted adults working with youth on culturally and developmentally responsive approaches to reducing underage alcohol and nicotine use.
Primary Project Goals are to: 1) Build infrastructure to better address substance use among youth ages 12-20; 2) Reduce use of alcohol and nicotine among Pima County youth and young adults ages 12-20; 3) Increase awareness among parents, trusted adults and families in Pima County of prevention education and early intervention services addressing underage substance use.
Number Served: SAAF's proposed project will serve 675 youth, 400 service providers, and approximately 5,000 parents, guardians, and care givers through the 5-year funding period.
