RYSULT NYC (Reducing Youth Substance Use for LGB and TGNC individuals in NYC) - The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center), located in Manhattan in New York City (NYC), will implement a prevention navigator program, Reducing Youth Substance Use for LGB and TGNC individuals in NYC (RYSULT NYC), to expand its outreach and services for prevention to LGBTQ young adults ages 13-24 in NYC with particular emphasis on outreach to racial minorities in Bronx, Kings, New York, and Queens counties.
In 2014, The Center contracted Strengths in Numbers Consulting Group (SNCG) to conduct a feasibility study on developing an LGBT-specific Substance Use Disorder (SUD) intervention program. According to this comprehensive scholarly and local community-based research, LGBTQ youth are twice as likely to abuse drugs than non-LGBTQ youth. Of young LGBTQ adults ages 30 and under, served by The Center in 2018, 23% identified substance use as a concern at intake, of whom, 60% also identified mental health disorders or conditions and/or expressed suicidality. The Center has determined, through years of experience and research, that LGBTQ youth are not only at higher risk of SUD and HIV but also that there are significant gaps in SUD and HIV prevention services provided to them.
The goal of RYSULT NYC is to provide training and education around the risks of substance misuse, education on HIV/AIDS to youth ages 13-24 living in NYC, specifically targeting racial minorities, and needed linkages to service provision for youth with HIV. To achieve this goal, RYSULT NYC will meet the following objectives: (1) By 2023, The Center will develop and implement messaging and awareness campaigns, utilizing various community partners, targeting LGBTQ youth throughout NYC, expanding outreach beyond its core service area; (2) The Center will provide trainings during the project period to non-LGBTQ focused SUD treatment and other healthcare providers on the importance of screening for HIV and how to overcome barriers when referring youth to treatment; and (3) By the end of the project period, The Center will have increased the spectrum of SUD and HIV prevention services available to minority LGBTQ youth in NYC to include navigation services and screening and testing for HIV and Hep C.
The Center anticipates serving 150 unduplicated youth annually, ages 13-24, who are from NYC through the RYSULT NYC initiative annually. The Center anticipates serving 750 youth during the five-year grant period. In serving the 150 unduplicated youth annually, The Center anticipates the following measurable outputs being achieved annually: 150 HIV tests will be provided; 150 Hep C tests will be completed; 25 dual risk factors harm reduction conversations will occur; 150 youth will participate in substance misuse prevention education services; and
150 youth will participate in HIV risk factor and risk reduction education services.
