Prevent Together: Battle Ground Prevention Alliance is a coalition working to prevent and reduce substance abuse among youth served by the area covered by the Battle Ground School District. - Since September 2014, Prevent Together: Battle Ground Prevention Alliance has been serving the Battle Ground Community through the Drug Free Communities Program. The coalition has focused on establishing and strengthening collaboration in the Battle Ground community, and to build capacity and representation among youth, community leaders, and representatives from the twelve sectors and beyond. The coalition has developed and implemented a comprehensive approach to and prevent and reduce youth substance use, and support youth in making healthy choices. Prevent Together Coalition has worked to reduce youth access to prescription drugs, alcohol and tobacco; and created awareness and educated our community to address the low perception of harm regarding youth substance use. The coalition has also targeted some of the factors in our community that increase the risk of substance abuse. Prevent Together has created pro-social activities to bring our community together and promote the factors that minimize the risk of substance abuse. Prevent Together has implemented the seven strategies of community change by working with our sector representatives and community partners to: educate youth, parents and community partners about the impact of tobacco (vaping), marijuana and alcohol on adolescent brain development; target drug use hot spots with strategic best practices; and educate/engage retailers in reducing youth access to alcohol in retail outlets. We also have worked together to reduce access to prescription drugs by coordinating Drug Take Back Days two times per year. During this past year, 512 participants returned 1,375 pounds of drugs at the Battle Ground Police Station. Youth engagement has been a high priority for the coalition. Our youth have contributed over 2,100 hours of service in the past four years. They concentrated on peer to peer education about the impact of underage drinking, marijuana, tobacco, vaping, bullying and mental health, with a focus on healthy alternatives to be substance abuse, tools to help youth identify their own personal strengths, and “keys” to stay drug free. As the coalition looks toward continuing the work of the coalition in years six through ten, the coalition looks to target emerging youth substance use trends with strategic initiatives, continue our successful strategies, increase our capacity and sustainability, and bring our community together to support our youth in staying drug-free and making healthy choices.
